Erläuterungstext
The design question concerned the activation of the deteriorated Renaissance castle of Duke Pierre Ernest de Mansfeld into a new and vibrant heart of the Clausen district and the city of Luxemburg as a whole. Clausen, a lower neighbourhood of Luxemburg city, has seen many layers of history leaving its mark: floodplains, a monastery, industrial activities, agricultural endeavours, renaissance palace, residential neighbourhood and recently a nightlife district. All this allows us to read the setting as a constructed palimpsest. However, the last century’s sprawl pushed some of the commons into the background. Public baths, gardens, breweries, and mills vanished. Our urban project echoes the site’s history while addressing contemporary environmental challenges. It’s not about fully developing Mansfeld immediately, but gradually reviving layers of history to find broad support with the neighbours, the city and the wider context. We proposed interventions at varying speeds. Some go beyond the designated competition plot and trigger local dynamics, letting the project take root and (possibly) be embraced.
