Constructive Alps

Solčava is an Alpine village located in the upper part of the Savinja river valley, at the foot of the Olševa and Raduha mountains.In the past, the village was more strongly linked with Carinthia than with other parts of the Savinja valley.

The new Rinka centre is located in the centre of the village on a spot which was previously occupied by the Rinka guesthouse, built in the early 50s and abandoned for the last few decades. The volume and the capacity of the object were determined in advance by the floor plan circumference at the very edge of the terrain determined for construction, as well as the prescribed height and roof angle.

The building programme is a response to the specific spatial situation. Along the closed wall facing the neighbouring house there is the dark zone with the service area, installations and vertical communitations. The main space is open on three sides and carried by just four pillars which enables openness and flexibility.
The cellar and ground floor premises are intended for the visitors and planned to simultaneously accept two buses of visitors.
In cellar there is the tourist information centre and an exhibition space with a multipurpose room. The terrain´s slope was used for the entrance on the same level.
The ground floor is entered through the entrance on the street level and hosts a store with local products, a culinary corner offering food products from the neighbouring farms, an internet corner, a children's corner and a small library.
The furniture was custom made by local carpenters, the tables and the chairs are a contemporary interpretation of traditional furniture.
On the first floor there are offices and in the attic there are two apartments which are now occupied by the municipality.

The facades are very different from each other due to their different roles. The side facade along the road is plastered as it continues the existing line of houses almost imperceptibly.
The wooden front facade makes the building visible from afar testifying to its specific and central role in the village.

The new building does not only design the physical space, but also the social space of the village. People stop here, do their daily work and meet other people and visitors.
