Projektbeschreibung

The Beira-Rio Stadium is an icon of the city of Porto Alegre. Opened on April 6, 1969, is the home of S.C. Internacional, the football club with 104 years of tradition. For many years, the stadium remained in usable condition with reforms and basic maintenance, deterioration with the natural action of weather and heavy use. Roof coverage was a request from fans, as well as general infrastructure improvements. With the decision to reform and modernize the stadium, projects began to be developed.

In 2012 began the works for modernization of the stadium, and on March 19, 2012 the contract between the International and the construction company Andrade Gutierrez S.A. was signed. The contract includes the maintenance of the main structure of the stadium with new lower tiers and modernization of facilities for general public, including new VIP areas, replacement of old electrical and plumbing systems, complementing the information systems of the stadium, replacing the football field grass (with modification of the drainage system), new roof with metal structure and PTFE membrane and building a garage for 3,000 vacancies.

To get the home of S.C. Internacional ready for the World Cup, Santini e Rocha Arquitetos managed more than 30 architecture and engineering projects inside and outside the Beira-Rio Stadium. These include the new metallic cover, which was already part of the modernization project for the stadium even before the 2014 World Cup.

“The FIFA Requirements Booklet gives priority to security, accessibility and supporter comfort. In the other items, there are several recommendations which are not mandatory but which, if the project does not include them, could lead to exclusion from the World Cup. Hence, we shall work to get the Beira-Rio ready within the proposed deadline, so that it may host World Cup games through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup”, explains architect Cícero Santini.
