Erläuterungstext

The JamSil site has its origin in amorphous confluence from the fluvial dynamics of Han River’s three tributaries. (Tancheon, Yangjaecheon and reclaimed Buricheon)

It was as late as in the 1980’s when JamSil Stadium was first implanted onto the site to host a pair of the first international sports gatherings in the city. Since then, the stadium has remained the one and only civic building on heartfelt Han River.

The JamSil site is envisioned to be a regional and global anchor driven both by inherent geographic function and aspiring civic identity on the north-south and west-east axes. With the realization of a set of public initiatives and new construction projects, the site takes the round-shaped development framework towards the phased completion.

Ever-growing Ground & Built-form: Tancheon is proposed to restore its natural function and growth form as a city ecological system.

Eco-Land for Future Industries: Tancheon Waterfront plays a spine role for developing a new city neighborhood in the western bank area infilled with residence-offices and R&D studios. A new convention center along with the supporting uses is proposed on the east bank.

Seoul CALT & Optimum MXD: Taking over the existing role of city airport terminal from COEX, the EGG performs seamlessly the gateway function to the city with multi-modal connection with the existing subway lines and a new marina to the north.

Big Underground Round-about & Waterfront Walk: A ‘Big Round-about’ is proposed around JamSil Stadium at below-ground level, which consolidate the function of scattered ramps around the site.

Jamsil Symbol for New Urban Life: JamSil Stadium, maintaining the morphological integrity of structure with architectural expression, is renovated into an expanded contemporary complex compactly enveloped with a set of transparent glasses with extensive new public programs.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

The project produces a unique design solution wrapping the Main Stadium in new envelope for preserving the historical landmark. It also represents an approach based on ecological sustainability for the waterfronts in the Han River and the Tancheon, while well combining urban and sports functions connected to the existing urban fabric.
