Erläuterungstext

Hönö is a small island municipality with ca 9 000 inhabitants situated on the Swedish West Coast. The island is just an hour from the center of Gothenburg – and is one of the largest islands in Gothenburg’s archipelago. Hönö is a traditional fishing community with a history that goes back thousands of years and is more or less the cradle of the Swedish fishing industry. The landscape is a mosaic of small dwellings crammed between rocks that shelter from heavy winds.

In early 2023 MARELD together with Erséus Arkitekter and contractor FO Peterson won the land allocation competition for a new housing area on Hönö. Besides residential dwellings it has specific housing for elderly.

MARELDs task was to maximize ecosystem services in the proposal. The project area is part of a cultural landscape bordering an old village and a patch of forest. It is well-protected from the westerly winds by a large rocky hill characteristic to the island. Several important ecosystem services were identified during an analysis. These include pollination, biodiversity, mosaic landscape, cultural history, and pedagogic value. The exiting natural and cultural values are preserved and enhanced.

Many of the existing dry stone walls were preserved as important historical traces but also as corridors of biodiversity. Rainwater was led to existing ditches and raingardens, and use of pavement was drawn to minimum. The courtyard provides a landscape for creative play and acts as a natural meeting point between generations. All this was appreciated by the jury.
