Erläuterungstext
Trondheim is one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia with a history dating back more than a thousand years. However, the city’s historic past does not prevent active renewal and development of the old city core. The area around Kjøpmannsgata has always been the city's port and trade center, with characteristic warehouses lining the street west of the river Nidelva. The city plans to give the kilometer-long stretch a clearer role in the cityscape, both as an attractive meeting place, a recreation area and a carrier of Trondheim's urban history through architecture as well as landscape.
With a new wooden boardwalk, the river is made accessible with the same attractive force as Aker Brygge in Oslo or perhaps The Highline in New York. Here, the visitor can stroll around at the leisurely pace of the flâneur. The generous promenade expands, narrows and meanders around the existing tree trunks. It twists and turns to face the beautiful facades and the plazas along the river. Furthermore, the proposal opens up for a future rezoning of the area from commercial to mixed use with housing.
